National identity vs. ethnic identity: What do the Togolese say?
According to the results of Afrobarometer's latest survey, Togolese identify more with their nationality than with their ethnic groups, and feel strong ties with other fellow citizens. However, more than half of them say that members of the ethnic groups to which they belong are unfairly treated by the government because of their ethnicity "sometimes", "often" or "always", although many say that this kind of discrimination never occurs.
Interpersonal trust is widespread among Togolese, who would like or be indifferent to inter-ethnic marriage. The majority of respondents would welcome the idea of having as neighbors people of a different ethnicity or religion, immigrants or foreign workers, or supporters of another political party. On the other hand, they are opposed to the idea of having homosexuals in their neighborhood.
Key findings
The majority of Togolese are more or equally attached to their national identity than to their ethnic identity. Only 15% put more emphasis on their ethnicity.
Strong majorities of Togolese say they feel strong ties with their fellow citizens (90%), and that other citizens see them as Togolese just like themselves (93%).
However, more than half (52%) of respondents say that members of the ethnic groups to which they belong are unfairly treated by the government because of their ethnicity "sometimes", "often" or "always", while 46% of citizens say that discrimination based on ethnicity "never" occurs.
More than nine out of 10 Togolese (93%) would like or be indifferent to inter-ethnic marriage. The majority of Togolese trust people from other ethnic groups "a little" or "a lot" (65%), as well as their fellow citizens (69%) and people of other religions (65%).
Similarly, the majority of citizens would like to have as neighbors people of other ethnic groups (83%) or religions (81%), immigrants (77%) and supporters of other political parties (64%), but are intolerant of homosexuals (87%).
